Dick's Review | We went to this one and all felt The New Riders played better. After hearing the tape again, I now feel like there are some very nice moments in this show, although the 1st set didn’t have many of them! Playin' In The Band is always going to sound a bit extra special since it focuses on the instrumental. The good stuff starts coming on after the vocal parts of Truckin' are over. This jam section is in the Truckin' rhythm and it soon gets bigger and bigger until we are flying into The Other One which continues instrumentally for a very nice jam section before formally (singing words) laying it down (this jam section is one of the highlights. Nothing really great but for a pretty uneventful show, this sounds refreshing! The Other One is fairly short and leads into a drum solo and jam (both of which are lengthy) with Phil which is in itself one of the treats of this show. This changes into a very special jam section which is hot with burning improvisational stuff and then turns inward and spacey for a considerable amount of time and for me forms the major highlight of the show. This jam section seems to go on for a long time, climbing again to a fast tempo before re-stating The Other One. This quickly leads into a nice breezy jam section before closing with a very good version of Morning Dew |
