Dick's Review | I am wondering why Rob mentioned this show as something to get. He said the recording was excellent but the show wasn’t anything special. Well he’s right on the 2nd count but the quality isn’t at all excellent. If you didn’t count the horrible quality of the vocals (maybe it was in the PA system) you might put this in the class of very good to excellent. The 1st set is as mediocre as a 1st set as I can recall. Only 10/9/77 and 1/6/78 rival it in that capacity. The best tune Scarlet Begonias is cut just as it is reaching an exciting climax, and I had to really stretch it to give any of the tunes in this poor 1st set a red star rating. The 2nd set opens with Lesh and Lagin doing Warp-10 stuff which is way more interesting than anything so far except the audience can be heard talking throughout this opening material. But then, things change drastically: The quality definitely becomes excellent and the performance takes on all the characteristics of a typically exciting dead concert. One of the better China Cat Sunflower > I Know You Rider and Big River. There’s some outstanding playing in the playing in the band part of the long jam from the 2nd set and in the jam section which so close to going into Nobody's Fault But Mine. |
