Dick's Review | Uncle John's Band starts things off nicely with a long instrumental part that tastefully rolls along for an unusually long time - Almost 10 minutes! Even Jack Straw sounds exceptional, especially for this period of time. Scarlet Begonias also sounds very appetizing with a fairly long instrumental closing section maybe it is just because their style here is so different from 1980 but I seem to feel pretty enthusiastic about this performance. Their playing is tight and also inspirational and creative. Usually 1974 shows tend to be fairly uneventful for the 1st sets. Nothing much is happening till Playin' In The Band which has some nice unassuming playing on it. That basically feels like a “jazzy” type of style. But there is lots of trips going on here that all add up to making this the clear highlight of the 1st set. Near the end they do go into a more spacey typical style of play. Eyes Of The World is very well done with a nice Lesh solo about midway thru it. He’s Gone > Truckin' is pretty good but nothing exceptional. The drum and bass jam is one of the highpoints or at least one of the more unique aspects of this show but it quickly (a couple of minutes evolves into the actual highpoint of the show. The jam section preceding Ship Of Fools. This section is filled with aggressive and creative energy that has Lesh riffing on Caution in the beginning. This Jam which really qualifies as a jam is very long also (10 - 15 min) This is one of the better shows from 1974 |
