Dick's Review | The quality is excellent and is light years better quality than any of the audience recordings from this show. Bob (Menke) also says that this is one of his most favorite shows (that he has seen) from all of 1977 with only 3-18-77-winterland being as exciting. They open with the 1st Casey Jones since 10/17/74 and it is one of the best versions from modern years. Of course they will probably never surpass the rendition from 12/2/71-Boston Music Hall! Nothing much happens until we get a complete and totally mind blowing shocker: the first rendition of Dupree's Diamond Blues which hasn't been performed since 1969! Let It Grow is one of the better versions of this tune (of course not as good as 5-14-78 Providence) Deal is bursting with energy and effectiveness. The 2nd set is dynamite. Beginning with good and energetic versions of Samson And Delilah and Scarlet Begonias > Fire On The Mountain. Playin' In The Band is fairly short (10 min) but effective as in the entire show. (Nothing stupendous but everything being highly entertaining) everything from then on is pretty average with no real intensity. I guess after hearing this show closely my main thoughts is that I am surprised that Menke puts this in the same class as 3-18-77, let alone some of the more exceptional shows that he has seen from this year ie 2-26-77, 6-8-77 Winterland even 6-7-77 but most especially the 6-4-77 LA show which is significantly more entertaining than this one! |
