Dick's Review | As with almost all of their April and May shows, this one is quite entertaining but has no radical surprises. The tunes are, for the most part, all delivered with gusto but I guess I am clearly longing for some different material. How many times can they get off on playing excellent versions of the same songs that they’ve been doing well for so many years? The quality is excellent with a few reservations: (1) There is too much hissiness and tininess to the sound (2) The bass is not very distinct. This is one of the most exciting versions of Minglewood Blues that I can remember ( only 5-7-77 comes to mind!) The jam is clearly the highlight of the show with only the jam material on being of exceptional quality. I really feel that the stuff they do in this jam section is truly great: brain rattling! Not Fade Away comes out of this spacey jam and one would swear he was in for “Caution” the way Garcia is playing. The highlight of the jam is Goin' Down The Road Feelin' Bad which is rare for one but this version is quite exceptional |
