Dick's ReviewThis was the first show that I saw and I felt afterward that it was the best I’ve ever seen the band perform. Reinhart (Hohlwein) made excellent recordings of all 5 shows so we have quite a bit of great entertainment to put our attention on. I guess the most unique change is the amount of attention Weir is commanding. He is practically the leader of the band and on all these shows he is constantly scorching our ears with slide guitar solos. One nice aspect to this performance is that Keith is apparently featured throughout the show, that is you can hear him clearly whereas he is hardly noticeable on the other shows. The 1st set is pretty slow and uneventful. The playing seems laid back and without much aggressive energy. Weir has lots of “Peter Townsend” energy for the off-beat accent during Bertha which is very exciting when experiencing this live. It was during the percussion jam where I felt the highlight of this show had been reached but from then on things got higher and higher till the building shook for a tremendous and thrilling version of Truckin' which clearly was for me the highlight of the show. Actually there was another truly fine moment that was equal to Truckin' and this was the jam section that started with a harp playing in the background and then Weir layed down the cords and rhythm. Wharf Rat also was one the highest and most thrilling versions
