Dick's Review | It has surely taken awhile to evaluate these November 1978 shows which I have always felt were lacking in excitement. Laidback to say the least! The quality is quite excellent but I’m skeptical of the quality of the performance. Mississippi Half Step > Franklin Tower sounds quite reserved. Almost tame by any comparison with other periods. By things must have been tough during this period by the way Minglewood Blues comes across. It sounds awkward and out of sync. Maybe they haven’t done this tune in awhile! The 1st set ends quite nicely and I’m beginning to shift a bit in my opinion of this show. Dancin' In The Streets is pretty tantalizing although not in the “great versions” category. Both Terrapin Station and Playin' In The Band are innocuous or uneventful. The percussion jam is still (this late in the 1978 since it’s unusual inception in April 1978) is quite interesting and involving, with many “side musicians” making contributing sounds with excellent consistency. The following jam segment is actually a tentative statement of the jam that involved the youth choir and Hamza El-Din at Egypt and several US locations but is barely touched upon, The remainder of the show is pretty unexciting marching the basic character of this show. If i need a reel for some recent show then this one will get the axe |
