Dick's ReviewWell, it certainly has taken me awhile to organizing this show which is one of my favorites from this January tour. The quality on this recording is stupendous. Only 12-30-78 is as great. Besides 1/17 and 1/18 it is so fantastic that every tune sounds unusually exciting. Even Jack-A-Rogue (Jack A Roe) which is pretty much the same each time. As it turns out, things slow down considerably for the remainder of the 1st set after Row Jimmy which isn’t very exceptional even though I gave it a small red star. The 2nd set opening medley is also pretty uneventful. Terrapin Station is one of the finer versions and Playin' In The Band is very aggressive and one of the more interesting versions of this tune. Just before the 1st jam section, there is a very exciting “Brain-Frying” piece to end an excellent rendition of Playin' In The Band. The percussion jam is unique in that the predominant sound is the bongos or talking drum and they maintain a relaxed rhythm pattern that beautiful flow into one of the highlights of all time! The 2nd jam section is “music from my deep past or my roots" according to Carol. You never would want this sound to stop but I guess it is just too good to keep doing so they drop back into Playin' In The Band for the 1st time that I can remember they don’t stop here but add one more nice touch! Casey Jones is very exciting. One of the best.
