Dick's Review | I think it is one of his (Dave Weldner) best efforts ever. Except for waving the mikes around or some such fuck up during Mississippi Half Step... which was pretty good. Franklin’s Tower starts off with a fine rush and manages to get a couple of things off the ground. Of course not even close to the great versions (ie 4/8/78 and 5/4/79) of this fairly unusual medley. Minglewood Blues finishes things off in a similar fashion. Exciting but restrained. All things considered, a promising opener. Both Cassidy and Candyman are nice crowd pleasing versions. But Little Red Rooster is a killer. You know you are in the midst of something exciting! The remainder of the 1st set is good and quite listenable but nothing stands out much. Scarlet Begonias > Fire On The Mountain is about average sort of on the same general feeling this show seems to illustrate tune after tune. I sure like the quality of Dave’s recording though. Estimated Prophet is not very noticeable. Good length but no solid direction. Eyes Of The World is nice but again nothing special. The percussion jam is better than usual. The jam section is the most inspiring playing so far as they attack the attractive rhythmic pattern set up by the drums. Then they slow down and meander awhile until Garcia gets tired of trying to find a nice way to bridge the next tune and just starts Not Fade Away out of nowhere. This attempt is much longer than usual and it has a bit more intensity and excitement than most of the versions in the last few years. Black Peter is better than usual. Sugar Magnolia just might be the highlight of the show. |
