Dick's ReviewJack Straw opens with a bit above average excitement. Things continue in a very positive fashion with fairly noticeable versions of all tunes with Minglewood Blues standing out nicely. Very excellent and the most exciting playing so far is the closing medley. China Cat Sunflower seems especially potent. Feel Like A Stranger opens the 2nd set in a promising fashion. Bird Song is quite nice carrying this show on in a very fine fashion and Playin' In The Band is also very entertaining although not fantastic. The 1st jam section is another special part of this show as it tastefully develops the more abstract themes of Playin' In The Band. The percussion jam is very good but the highlight of this show is the great melt down they get into during the 2nd jam section. Not Fade Away is as exciting as I have heard it in awhile. It seems that they have put less and less attention on this tune since 1979. Also this must qualify as equal in excitement to the fine 2nd jam section if only for the surprise of hearing a good version! If they continue to build from here this show will easily get a Lightning Skull Award. It is already the best show of the July '81 tour. Wharf Rat is excellent and Sugar Magnolia is superb as it finishes off one of the best shows of the year.
