Dick's Review | Kidd said on the phone that it was a great show. Scarlet Begonias > Fire On The Mountain starts slowly and promisingly but never really gets off. Same for Estimated Prophet until near the end where things take off in an uptempo fashion that is very unusual and very exciting. The jam section following He’s Gone is kind of neat but things really get hot with Weir’s Led Zeppelin imitation near the end of this section. After a fairly average percussion jam we get what I consider to be the highlight of the show: A unique and developed rendition of the Spanish Jam that starts in a way that I’ve not heard before. Only 5/6/81 - Nasssau is more unique and complete. Seems like they try it 3 separate times before that tantalizing hint at The Other One and then suddenly we get Truckin'. They get a very good jam going at the end that practically boogies out as occurs at the end of Black Peter for one of the really unusual and exceptional moments of this show. Only on 12/26/81 - Oakland has something like that occurred. And that wasn’t close to this attempt. As far as the 1st goes C.C. Rider has to be one of their most exciting attempts. Bertha is a rousing finish to an up and down 1st set. |
