Dick's Review | The show itself starts pretty slow for a nassau show! Minglewood Blues is at a pleasantly slower tempo and has some thrilling playing by both Weir and Garcia. The remainder of the 1st set is pretty uneventful (except for a great closer). The 2nd set starts off with what many consider the most interesting and exciting version ever of Scarlet Begonias > Fire On the Mountain. I am still pretty much swayed by the attempt on 9-2-78 Meadowlands NJ. In this one they spend a full 18 minutes on just the opening tune before dropping into Fire On The Mountain which I can't see as the equivalent of the intense and burning version from 9/2/78. Not much after this until a very entertaining and involving version of Playin' In The Band which is actually the best playing so far. The jam section following is also pretty interesting and captivating. The percussion jam is pretty unnoticeable but the re-entry jam section is another tantalizing section that starts slow and has the hint of something special soon to come but things degress unfortunately into Black Peter. It almost seems as if Scarlet Begonias > Fire On The Mountain blew them out so that final jam was anti-climatic. |
