Dick's Review | My favorite night of the 5 shows - although the 3rd and 5th nights were very fine. Cold Rain And Snow was my choice for starters for this 5 show extravaganza and it is done with exceptional enthusiasm. C.C. Rider seems to slip in with hardly any one noticing it! As contrasted with the 1st time they did it in Pittsburgh on 12/1/79. Me And My Uncle even sounds unique! Big River has some good keyboard stuff and is generally pretty tight and hot. Again, to show how good this show is, we get a unique version of Brown Eyed Women which is usually the same good song every time. Alabama Getaway is always hot. It seems but this rendition here just can’t seem to come down! And the crowd noticeably gets off here. A rousing Promised Land follows and together they comprise the easy high point of the 1st set. The longest jam in modern (after 1970) History starts with the re-entry of Uncle John's Band which is the 1st time since 6/7/77! I think and it is the best version I ever heard! Following a good Estimated Prophet, we get magic: there are at least 4 tunes they flirt with deliciously before clearing with He's Gone first it is the expected Eyes Of The World but then it flows into something shockingly close to Caution then Stella Blue and finally it is He's Gone which is average. One of the big thrills for me is the bass intro in The Other One and here it is devastatingly timed! The Other One and percussion jam are both fairly average with a few exciting moments then comes a surprising inclusion of Not Fade Away (very good which leads to another shocker Brokedown Palace. Encore is superb | |
