Dick's ReviewThe quality is not sounding good for the first half of the 1st set. The reason is because the PA was totally screwed up in this half-filled Barn. Most everyone was pissed about the quality of the sound but I felt it was the best first set from the 4 shows that I saw, performance-wise. They weren’t hurting for energy as Harry Poppick said! The sound quality actually improves greatly by the time they get to Promised Land which is very exciting. The real essence of the 1st set comes during the last 3 tunes starting with another (this is one of the more consistent turn-ons during the latest tour) burning Minglewood Blues. But the highlight for me emotionally was Sugaree. It was hard to believe they didn’t end the 1st set at that point! Estimated Prophet is quite extended and contains more excitement that most versions after 1978. Nice transition to Uncle John’s Band which isn’t nearly as interesting as the versions from the 3 Oakland shows in December of 1979. The percussion jam seemed quite intense in person, especially from the vantage point that I had but on tape it doesn't sound very tantalizing. But then again it is more entertaining than Uncle John’s Band and the following jam. Wharf Rat picks things up nicely but the final two rockers are especially hot with Johnny B. Goode being the more exciting to finish an excellent show, we get my kind of encore!
