Dick's Review | This is one of the better shows of the tour, if that is even meaningful, since most of the shows on this tour were excellent, in the same way this show is! Wagner felt that this was his favorite show (especially the 2nd set) of the tour which he saw completely. The quality is definitely one of the better example of the fine work my friends are accomplishing. It is bright, strong and clear just like 5/11/80 Portland and 5/12/80 Boston) the nicest thing about the opening medley is that we get the rarer inclusion of Greatest Story Ever Told but neither tune is alarming in any way but the Me And My Uncle > Big River medley is thrilling, especially Big River where Garcia stings you with very exciting solos. Lazy Lightning > Supplication is very “punchy” in attack. The 2nd set opens with an exciting version of China Cat Sunflower > I Know You Rider although I don’t think it is quite up to the exceptional versions from 5/10 Hartford and 5/12 Boston. Feel Like A Stranger and He’s Gone are both fairly average but things pick up considerably with the jam section setting up The Other One in a pretty exciting way. Wagner said this version of The Other One is one of the best but I feel more like it is very good (not like 8/13/79, 12/5/79, 10/27/79) The percussion jam is much more exciting than usual. The jam section is also very tasty as is the remainder of the show. |
