Dick's Review | The 1st set is very short and fairly uneventful as far as song selection is concerned but the performance is very good for a 1st set. Scarlet Begonias is pretty good, a little above average for these years. The great versions “stopped” in 1978. Fire On The Mountain is also pretty intense and is more exciting than most versions. In fact it is very fine! Estimated Prophet starts off in a rousing fashion but then slows down until entering Eyes Of The World which is also very aggressive and intense for 10 minutes or so. It is happening before easing into the percussion jam which is pretty average although quite entertaining. The jam section makes the whole show somehow a bit extra special! It is a slow starting but effective building improvisational section that is pretty exciting and leads to a nice solo section by Garcia which soon falls into the old favorite but under-performed Not Fade Away (at least since 1978!) This one has some juice to it and is somewhat of a surprise treat. Wharf Rat is fantastic and almost has to be considered a major highlight of this show. Sugar Magnolia is also one of the most exciting finishes to a fantastic 2nd set. |
