Dick's Review | Bertha > Promised Land starts things off in Thunder Skull Award fashion. Easily one of the best attempts at this starting medley in the last couple of years, not really stunning like 1977 but definitely more than usual. The remainder of the 1st set is pretty average with Let It Grow being a nice creative finish to a good first set. The opening of the 2nd set didn’t grab my attention a whole lot. Playin' In The Band is very nice and then a surprising position for Eyes Of The World which is done with quite a bit of gusto. The percussion jam is uneventful but the following jam section has some strange goings on. It starts with a mild tentative exploration including offbeat kazoo playing. Then we get Phil doing a vocal description of the 1906 San Francisco Earthquake. Doesn’t seem overpowering but it certainly is weird. The Other One is extremely short and disappointing in its lack of commitment. Sugar Magnolia is very spirited with a nice bouncy rinky tink feeling to the piano! Then a surprising coda to Playin' In The Band with Sunshine Daydream bringing it all in perspective. This doesn’t particularly seem to be an exceptional second set. |
