Dick's ReviewThis seems like a perfect occasion to take a closer look at this excellent show at least as far as I remember it. The board tape is very good and I also have kept Menke’s audience tape since this show is so exceptional. We shall now listen with new ears. Minglewood Blues seems to destroy any pessimism very fast. Superb version! Sugaree and Little Red Rooster are just as exciting. I have a difficult time recalling such a promising opening. Nothing special until Looks Like Rain which feels bigger than usual. It’s not that the middle of the first set is uneventful; it is just that nothing comes near the intensity of the opening medley. China Cat Sunflower > I Know You Rider is a fine finish to a very good 1st set although it doesn’t feel as dominating as the opening segment. Playin' In The Band is quite short but also very intense as befitting a show that seems to qualify for a Thunder Skull Award. Crazy Fingers is in the same vein very entertaining but not a clear blow-out. The jam segment is quite inconsequential, although still tasteful. Saint Of Circumstance clearly touches all the bases. Very moving! Possibly the first west coast Touch of Grey was a big treat but not overwhelming. The remainder of the 2nd set is also very good but again nothing much stands out on the exceptional level. Sugar Magnolia is a fine finish to a very good show.
