Dick's Review | Steve phoned me 15 minutes after the end of the show to tell me that this show as one of the Big Ones. He hasn't ever gone this far so I put a lot of weight to his perceptions. The show is a great one but 10/14/83 - Hartford is the best of the year by a small margin over this show. The start of the 1st set is OK but nothing really gives the evening’s potential away until Bird Song where there is a very exciting instrumental rush that comes close to The Other One. This period is where they added a solid finishing (?) touch to West L.A. Fadeaway which makes it a lot more more meaningful! The next tune is a song by Brent that he only attempted twice (one time on this tour a few days later) and I think it is his best contribution (as far as a song goes) so far. A very hot finish to an excellent 1st set, Uncle John’s Band is a rare surprise but they don’t seem to have the mixture that produced the 12/79 - Oakland versions! Truckin' > Drums is all well done but nothing is outrageous. This occurs in the next segment when Steve still does his thing for a couple of thrilling songs. These 2 songs by itself almost qualifies it for a Thunder Skull Award. The jam section contains another rarity: Weir’s trip on: I Want To Be A Star - Bob Star | |
