Dick's Review | This is perhaps the best show of 1983! The Performance is uniformly exciting. Alabama Getaway is about as an exciting attempt I ever heard. Blistering! Big River is also exceptionally rousing. Although each tune isn’t awesome they are each performed in a crisp sharp manner that is quite inspiring. Even Tennessee Jed stands out nicely. Scarlet Begonias > Fire On The Mountain is one of the best attempts in the last 4 years! Estimated Prophet is average and the following jam section is short and aimless. Eyes Of The World is one of the more revealing and stimulating versions in modern years. The percussion jam is uneventful, The jam section consists of Garcia solo for quite awhile until Weir joins in and they get into the Spanish Jam which is done nicely. (This is the style of playing that earns a Thunder Skull Award for this show.) They spend a long time setting up The Other One which makes for exciting anticipation. This attempt is one of the most exciting and satisfying tries since 10/21/78 - Winterland, Stunning! Stella Blue is riveting and one of the better versions (still quite a few jumps from 10/21/78) Sugar Magnolia is a thrilling finish to my favorite show of the year. (The 2nd set from Halloween 10/31/83 is my favorite 2nd set overall) |
