| Dick's Review | The quality is excellent (in fact it is scorching!!) but the reason that I’ve not evaluated this show is because the performance itself has never impressed me. It is what I would say represents a good show by any other standards than those set in 1970. In this year, the show falls below average. Saint Stephen is very brief and of no consequence. A long, un-eventful drum solo follows the barest of a taste of That’s It For The Other One. Finally there is a fairly exciting rush as Phil comes crashing in. I can easily imagine the electricity and the excitement present between band members during Phil’s set-up. This attempt although fairly acceptable (I mean it sounds pretty standard) lacks the rush of excitement of most versions from this period. The acoustic set is quite intimate and a pleasure and one of the highlights of the show. There are a couple of humorous remarks from Garcia to the audience during the acoustic part. Morning Dew is really exciting and is easily the best playing so far. Good Lovin' is also exceptional. Dark Star begins on an introspective note and then after about 12 minutes things gradually build to one of my many favorite themes or jams that sometimes occurs during Dark Stars from this period. In this case, this segment really slams it all home in one of the most thrilling of all fashions. Divine! Saint Stephen is short but exciting. Not Fade Away is also very nice but not too developed. Turn On Your Lovelight is excellent. Great encore. |
