Dick's Review | It has taken a while to get around to evaluating this show which others have felt pretty good about. Scarlet Begonias sure sounds different. Not much in the 1st set until a fine version of China Cat > I Know You Rider with the transition that I miss so much these days. Weather Report Suite really gets exciting at the end. Playin' In The Band starts with no vocal mics working and they actually come to a stop. (one of only 2 or 3 times I’ve ever heard them do this) After this they start again and this version sounds a bit unusual. Although nothing exceptional. There is noticeable rumble or distortion during the whole show that occurs every once in a while. Not a big problem. Uncle John’s Band is very nice with a lengthy instrumental section at the end. Before Garcia expertly and aggressively points the band in the direction of Morning Dew which is, as always a bit rare to hear. The transition back to Uncle John's Band is so clean that one hardly notices the change! This section is also very good and has another seamless transition back into Playin' In The Band which is just a vocal ending to the tune. Basically Wharf Rat is very nice and has a lot of lengthy ending section. Sugar Magnolia was a nice deliberate rhythm and is great. Casey Jones is very very very slow |
