Dick's Review | The show is exceptional. Sugaree is as good as I’ve heard it in a year or more with some unique playing that I haven’t heard before. Mexicali Blues is very hot and as usual it is preceded by a typically average Mama Tried. We get a very rare and surprising treat with Might As Well which hasn’t been done since 11-2-77 Toronto. But nothing stands out from the 1st set after Mexicali Blues. China Cat Sunflower > I Know You Rider is a nice surprise but this version isn’t particularly exciting in any way. Playin' In The Band is done for awhile longer it seems than usual and is fairly interesting. Things change radically with Not Fade Away wich is done in a more controlled and tasteful fashion, rather than a big crash of excitement as in many 1977 versions but it is quite short in length! Stella Blue is also tasty but in a subdued style and at the end there is a short pause before starting a very rousing version I Need A Miracle which drops into yet another surprise for an ending to a good closing jam. Sugaree is the highlight of the show although Not Fade Away is just as exciting. The problem with the quality of this recording is that there isn’t much of a middle frequency range and it doesn’t have the sparkling presence of tapes I would label as excellent. |
