Dick's Review | The show is as exciting as the others. Maybe it is in the same general performance class as 5/3. Sugaree is done in a very fine style with 3 peaks again and is one of the best versions of this tune. Nothing much is happening until we get to the 1st set closer which is pretty lively although nothing exceptional except in its shortness. The 2nd set opens with a very tasty and satisfying version of the Scarlet Begonias > Fire On The Mountain medley. Not especially in the thrilling category but very smooth and with excellent playing. He’s Gone is pretty fine but what follows is great: The jam section is a nice flirt with The Other One and has some really tasty performing. The percussion jam is one of the best from 1979! The 2nd jam section is similar to the 1st one except here they finally do flow into my favorite piece which is done very well. Not one of the best: 10-21-78, 8-13-79, 5-18-77, 10-12-77, 10-30-77 but in keeping with a superb quality jam. Wharf Rat which is nothing special has a super fine transition into Sugar Magnolia which is a fitting conclusion to a show which comes just as close as 5-3-79 to getting a Lightning Skull Award, |
