Dick's Review | I expect to only keep the 2nd set plus Let It Grow. Big River is also very exciting and worth keeping. The jam section following Playin' In The Band is one of the highlights of this excellent 2nd set. It contains all the ominous and eerie qualities of a fine melt-down (it is so good that it makes everything else seem above average also) The jam section following a brief drum solo has nothing noteworthy going on but what follows is one of the all-time best and most exciting version of Saint Stephen and only 10-25-70-St Louis seems as thrilling but of course we don’t have many excellent quality renditions from the old days! ) Not Fade Away is pretty entertaining but it is obviously losing some of the burning energy of several attempts from 1977 ie 3-18-77, 5-8-77. The re-entry back into Playin' In The Band almost qualifies as a jam section since it is unique and more than a few minutes in length. Features Garcia using a “phase-splitter” technique that culminate in the incredible rendition on 1-22-78 Eugene where he hits the Theme From Close Encounters Of The Third Kind |
