Dick's Review | I evaluated this show when I first got the tape but only with red stars. As I recall, I felt that the 2nd set was the best of the whole tour, if not the year! Minglewood Blues is very spunky. I like this way of playing it very much. Althea is exceptional. There are many firecracker explosions during the 1st set that always startle me. China Cat Sunflower > I Know You Rider starts the 2nd set off in a rousing fashion and the crowd definitely gets off! I have always thought of this version as being the best attempt during that part of the year of 1980. Now I’m not at all confident of that judgement. Feel Like A Stranger seemed adequate but didn’t stand out very noticeably. Comes A Time is always a treat to hear. It seems that this tune is definitely falling into the category of a rare tune. Estimated Prophet has a very nice middle section but the finish had no inspiration and just meandered down to He’s Gone which is always the same until the singing is over. The jam section is OK but it is mostly quite tentative and lacking any sincere direction or commitment. Uncle John’s Band is pretty exciting around the middle but the longer jamming at the end (after the words are over) was lackadaisical and without much desire. Not much (The percussion Jam was good) until a pretty exciting Not Fade Away which is about the most exciting thing so far in this show. Sugar Magnolia is a bit sloppy. All things considered this was a better than average show. Encore sucks. |
