Dick's Review | Steve felt this was one of his best quality recordings ever but it doesn’t stand up to 1/15/79 - Springfield. It still is very superb and the show itself was one of my favorites from the tour. It starts off with a great medley with the 1st two songs being done in especially exciting fashion. China Cat Sunflower > I Know You Rider is clearly the highlight of the 1st set. Again, Estimated Prophet is extended and a little better than usual considering the lack of emphasis they put on this tune in the last year or so. Then comes the most fantastic single segment of music for the entire tour: The jam section following a fairly average He’s Gone. This section lasts some 15-min and contains several very different feelings or moods. The 1st part is similar to the usual build-up to The Other One, it being up-tempo and aggressive. This leads into a classic “meltdown” before going into an introverted more spacey section. The percussion jam is kind of tasty and filled with several treats. The 2nd jam section is very unassuming and quickly leads to a surprising inclusion of Saint Of Circumstance which is very nice. Wharf Rat is uneventful and Sugar Magnolia is very nice but not exceptional. |
