Dick's Review | Promised Land gets things jumping near the end but the next 4 songs are all (scratched out: below) average versions at best. As usual lately Minglewood Blues is exciting but not as thrilling as the versions that I saw (ie 4/29 - 5/4. Ramble On Rose is pretty tasty and so is Looks Like Rain but China Cat Sunflower > I Know You Rider is the highlight of this 1st set. This version is very good but I don’t think it is up to the superb versions from 5/10 Hartford and 5/12 Boston. I Feel Like A Stranger is very fine and eerie. Althea is very thrilling and as good as I remember ever hearing it. Lost Sailor is excellent and Saint Of Circumstance is a monster and one of the lesser highlights of this “now famous” show. There is one superbly exciting section within a very nice version of eyes of the world. The percussion jam is exceptional with Bill and Mickey really attacking relentlessly. The following jam section flows spookily along and is very apropo. The 2nd big surprise (besides China Cat Sunflower > I Know You Rider) is a rare appearance of Truckin' but it doesn’t have much of an ending to it this time. Where there is usually the real possibility of 2 - 3 big rushes they stop at one and go into a jam almost that plays with The Other One and they almost get sidetracked before Garcia makes things clear with the really rare inclusion of Morning Dew which melted every tense nerve at this zoo. This version was better than on 11/8/79 but still doesn’t match 5/8/77 for example. My favorite type of encore: Brokedown Palace |
