| Dick's Review | This is an example of perfection on every level! Barry made what he considers his finest recording ever and cant expect much else from such a great show as this. Things start off with a very fine version of Feel Like A Stranger and Althea even tops the exceptional rendition from 2-28-81 - Chicago. We even hear some new licks poppin in here and there. C.C. Rider is also pretty good. They screw up during El Paso and as a result we get treated to some unique catch-up music. Deep Elem Blues is a rare treat, especially electrically. In the same style as It's All Over Now. Bird Song is very good but not matching up to the best yet version from 3/7/81. Near the end it sounds very much like old Dark Stars. China Cat Sunflower > I Know You Rider is very (one of the more exciting versions!!!!) tasty and has some more unique riffs in the beginning from Brent. In fact all the tunes sound refreshing for some reason. Samson And Delilah is also a rouser. Estimated Prophet is quite lengthy but is fairly average. Although still sounding great within the context of this magical night. There is some very appetizing jamming happening in the 1st jam section. Uncle John’s Band is long with lots of music as in the 12/79 - Oakland versions but this one isn‘t nearly as exciting. The percussion jam is very laid back (although better than some!!) and not too much excitement. The jam section following is also kind of low-key for the 1st few minutes but then we get a long section that builds the tension for the big explosion! Barry feels that this is the best The Other One in many years. Stella Blue is very well done and a perfect feeling to follow such a thrilling piece of music. There is a nice little section of music after Stella Blue where Garcia threatens with The Wheel but lets someone else have their way. |
