Dick's Review | Barry said that it would be hard for him to imagine anyone not feeling high and thrilled by the 2nd set which is surprising in its song list at least. Mississippi Half Step > Franklin's Tower > Me And My Uncle is pretty average. Usually Franklin’s Tower saves this medley since they stopped doing Mississippi Half Step with any sense of uniqueness and excitement but even here it doesn’t really get much off the ground. Things continue throughout the 1st set in this same uneventful fashion except for a fairly adequate version of Looks Like Rain > Deal. Scarlet Begonias is pretty good but Fire On The Mountain is very interesting and exciting and is very lengthy. Easily the highlight of the show so far. Lost Sailor is the same as usual but Saint Of Circumstance has an exceptional rush which is somewhat (exceptionally unique) The jam (all wrong. This jam is very tasty of a highlight) section is mostly concerned with setting up the drum solo which is very nice and entertaining with great cowbell action from Kruetzmann and Hart plays all the way through it. The 2nd jam section is mostly setting up The Wheel but it is nice and airy. Very few expected China Doll at this late point in the show and nobody was ready for Truckin' which has some extended jamming at the end but it is low key and sounds very close to Nobody's Fault But Mine. The transition into Sugar Magnolia (but its still a very thrilling version) is a lot less than one would hope for. Surprising encore but not as interesting as the New Year’s version in Oakland 1/1/84 |
