Dick's Review | This is one of my most exciting concerts in modern years especially the 2nd set which I think is the best of the year. Airto played the whole show and is in great part responsible for the overall intensity of this show. The quality is excellent and even has captured my thrill during Saint Stephen when they get to the only lyrics I’ve really ever noticed: One man gathers what another man spills! The 1st set is all pretty consistent. Enjoyable but nothing outstanding. The opening medley for the 2nd set is perhaps the best playing so far but the jam is where the goods are to be found. Estimated Prophet is quite stimulating but Eyes Of The World is easily one of their better tries in recent years. The percussion jam is clearly about the best I’ve ever heard. With Airto, how could you expect anything else! The following jam section is where things take a big jump creatively speaking. Garcia and Weir spend about 7 minutes stalling (after clearly indicating that a Saint Stephen was imminent) waiting for Brent and Phil. There is a great spontaneous moment where Mickey after apparently getting bored waiting for Phil and Brent takes the tempo up to a pace that sounds exactly like Eyes Of The World again. The rest is pretty good. |
