Dick's Review | Bob Wagner claims that this effort is his best so far and he is very high about the performance itself which I didn’t find to be anything extra special. At least when compared to 11/28 and 11/29. The show starts quite slowly with only Loser sounding special. Even Little Red Rooster didn’t have the usual excitement. Bird Song is pretty nice although the more recent the version, the more intense and exciting tune becomes. Lost Sailor > Saint Of Circumstance is very exciting which is somewhat surprising and Deal is also especially intense. Both combining to form the easy highlight of the 1st set which is below average at worst. Scarlet Begonias is at a slower tempo than usual and that adds to its uniqueness. There is some hot playing during the meat of this opening tune and the transition into Fire On The Mountain is very fine. (This 2nd half of the medley is pretty average). Playin' In The Band is pretty spiffy with a very nice laidback up tempo sound. and this is also the most improvisational of any piece so far. The jam > percussion jam is nothing noticeable. The next jam section is a very fine lead-in into The Wheel. The end of The Wheel almost qualifies as a jam but it is still some fine playing. Nothing happening after this. |
