Dick's Review | Jed said that everyone went bananas during Dancin' In The Streets but that might be the only good point about this performance. The quality is excellent but the 1st set leaves a whole lot to be desired. The only worthwhile part of the 1st set is the opener, which is getting rarer and rarer these days. Scarlet Begonias appears to be losing some of its potency. That is the medley is still “Hot” but it isn’t as exciting as a lot of 1977 versions. It is done in a more tasteful and controlled way, rather than stingingly exciting with raw energy. Weir plays slide very nicely on this tune. The jam makes everything worthwhile. Dancin' In The Streets is done even better than 5/9/78 with Weir and Garcia getting into some exciting dueling. The percussion jam is relentless in it’s pace which is fast with both drummers working more than usual, it is getting to seem like all the drum solos are exceptional, contrary to most tape addicts! Not Fade Away is also done with more intention and excitement than 5/9/78. There is lots of raucous shouting of lyrics, than seems unlike their usual professionalism. Werewolves Of London is clearly the best version yet. |
