| Dick's Review | This is an (extremely scratched out) very hot show and maybe the best of the 9 date east coast tour. Even Bob (Wagner), who is conservative said the first set was sizzling. Bob had to make this recording from the back of the place but still came out quite nice. It starts off with a very stunning version of Mississippi Half Step which I had come to feel that they just weren’t putting much into it since 1977 (5-7-77) and early 1978 (4-8-78). Franklin’s Tower simply squeals (but not the best) with delight. It being perhaps my favorite version (only 10-20-78 is in this class). I’m sure this is the finest combination yet of these two tunes. Mexicali Blues is one of the all-time finest versions. It typifies this whole show which is on fire! Usually a 1st set closer we get an inspiring Lazy Lightning > Supplication with Brent Mydland really beginning to sound impressive on keyboards. There really isn’t too much you can do with Don’t Ease Me In but it comes at you here. Passenger is really coming into something. The 2nd set opens with a good version (no wasted time on this one) of this familiar medley. Nothing as compared to the 2-17-79 version. Estimated Prophet is really superb and there is a very short but tasty jam right at the end of an average Eyes Of The World. The percussion jam is pretty decent whereas many lately have been less than satisfying. The jam section before Truckin' is very nice, not feedback or spacey, but unique and interesting. There is a nice touch they get into at the end of an average Stella Blue which leads into a fine transition into Around And Around which again features some nice keyboard work by Brent. |
